Marion Garaï bio

Marion Garaï has studied elephants for over 30 years, specializing in traumatised elephant behaviour. She has a Masters on the social behaviour of elephants in captivity from the University of Zürich and a PhD from the University of Pretoria, South Africa 1998, writing her dissertation on «The Development of Social and Stress Related Behaviours of Translocated Juvenile Elephants».

Since 1994 Garaï has been a member of the IUCN/SCC African Elephant Specialist Group. She was for eight years Chairperson and currently is the Vice Chair of the Space for Elephants Foundation (SEF) and she was Founder and Chairperson of the Elephant Management and Owners Association (EMOA) for twelve years. She is the Chairperson of the Elephant Specialist Advisory Group (ESAG) in South-Africa and a scientific advisor for the European Elephant Group (EEG).

Marion Gaaraï studied zoo and captive Asian elephants for ten years and worked in the elephant house in Zurich Zoo. She studied free ranging, but also traumatised translocated elephants in Africa and in Sri Lanka she studied the traumatised orphans at Pinnawela elephant orphanage. She published two books with Dr. Fred Kurt, one titled «The Asian Elephant in Captivity: A Field Study». She is the author of twelve publications to date, all on elephant behaviour and management, and the main author and editor of five elephant management manuals.
